Mobility Scooter Lifts
There was a time when individuals restricted to wheelchairs would have trouble getting around on
their own, getting into a vehicle, and even performing basic everyday tasks. Things are different now though. More
attention has been paid to the disabled and the way they perform everyday tasks.
A plethora of new devices have been invented, but most of the attention has been
paid to the wheelchair or 3 wheel mobility scooter and how it is used in the life of a disabled person. One of
the most difficult tasks in the past was traveling with a wheelchair simply because it was a nightmare to get
it into a vehicle. Luckily a few different methods for stowing electric wheel chairs in a vehicle were invented, one of which being the
line of Mobility Scooter Lifts and Mobility scooter ramps.
There are a few ways for you to use the Mobility Scooter Lifts, but they perform the same basic
function either way. What you have is a motorized platform capable of lifting the wheelchair into the trunk of the
vehicle. One thing to note is that some vehicles do not have the ability to store a wheelchair and lift within, so
some of these devices are designed specifically to suspend the wheelchair from the back of the vehicle.
The indoor/outdoor scooter carriers you choose will depend on your vehicle,
but for the most part this only works if you have a large SUV or truck. If you have a car that is closer to the
ground you may be able to simply lift the wheelchair in, but in the event you cannot, you could always have a
lift that sits directly in the back of the vehicle and slides out when necessary.
The price of scooter lifts and power chair lifts can be extremely high. If you were to choose a basic lift then you would
probably spend about one thousand dollars. There are more advanced systems out there, and you should take a look
at all of them to determine exactly what it is you need. There are a few things that you will need to take into
account, so let's take a look at them.
The first thing of course is the weight limit. All mobility scooter lifts are going to have some
sort of limit, so find out how much your scooter or Invacare wheelchair weighs and then determine whether or not it will
actually be supported by the device.
You also need to measure your scooter to see if it will actually fit on the lift. There are many
different lifts of many different sizes, and the last thing you want is to invest money in a lift that is not
compatible with your scooter. Sometimes people forget how big of an investment this is, so we will remind you that
it is not something you want to rush.
Keep in mind that not all lifts will actually allow you to ride the chair into the vehicle. Some of
them might be offset by the weight limit, and some simply might not be built that way. Once again it is important
for you to choose a lift that meets your needs, and if that means spending a bit more money than you planned then
so be it.
Electric Mobility Scooter Carrier - Harmar -
AL100
A universal outside scooter lift and one of the few available for a Class II hitch-equipped vehicle
(Class III is standard). The Harmar AL100 has a capacity of 350 lbs. yet only ways 95 lbs. Its quality
features, construction and durability make it one of the most popular outside lifts on the market. The Swing
Away option provides easy access to the trunk or lift gate of any vehicle. Deck automatically folds up, out of
the way, when empty.
In some cases your insurance company might actually pay for the device. It really depends on what
insurance carrier you have because the scooter lift isn't really considered vital for life. Don't assume that they
won't pay for it just because of this however. The best thing you can do is talk to the company supplying the
device and ask if they work with any major insurance carriers. If they do, then they might be able to work out a
deal with your insurance company. In most cases your insurance carrier will pick up some of the cost and have you
pay the rest. This is better than nothing, even if it wasn't the answer you were looking for.
In any case, you will find that these lifts are great for anyone who requires the use of a mobility
scooter. That being said, start looking into one and see if there are any that will meet your needs. If you are one
of the many confined to a wheelchair or scooter, you will find this a worthy investment.
